INDONESIAN EMBASSY TO AUSTRALIA

AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCED de facto recognition of the Republic of Indonesia on 9 July 1947 and de jure recognition on 27 December 1949. On 28 December 1949, Indonesia's Prime Minister, Mohammed Hatta, appointed Dr Raden Usman Sastroamidjojo as special political representative to take charge of Indonesian interests in Australia prior to an exchange of diplomats.

Dr Sastroamidjojo had been in Australia since 1947 in an informal capacity, based at Temple Court in Melbourne, to secure much needed supplies for and to discuss issues faced by the nascent Indonesian national government. In April 1950 he was appointed Charge d’Affaires ad interim to establish the Indonesian embassy in Canberra at Room 22, East Block. He later established premises in Acton.

Dr Raden Oetoyo, Indonesia's first Ambassador to Australia, arrived in Sydney on 3 July 1950 and presented his credentials to Governor-General McKell at Government House, Canberra on 7 July. He served until June 1953.

The Indonesian Embassy moved to its current location in Yarralumla, featuring its Wisma Wisata Budaya pavilion, in August 1971. President Suharto officially opened the Indonesian chancery on 7 February 1972 during his four-day State visit, the first visit to Australia by an Indonesian Head of State.

The current Indonesian Ambassador to Australia is Mr Siswo Pramono who presented
his credentials to Governor General Hurley on 8 December 2021. A career diplomat, he has previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission to Germany and as Head/Director of the Center for Policy Analysis and Development. Mr Pramono speaks fluent English and holds a Master of Law degree from Monash University in Melbourne and a PhD degree in political science from the Australian National University.
